There is a lot of information on this website, take your time, work through our pages. you will find everything you need about English Creative Writing to become the best author you can be.

Creative Writing - is it for you?

Writing is not for the procrastinators or the impatient. If you have a huge story burning inside you and you just need to let it out, find a comfortable chair because you are going to spend many hours in that chair. Some authors have spent years on one volume of work, just know that a story is alive, it is not static. It can grow, it is another world that you are creating and like in the real world, things can happen in your imagined world that can change the events of your whole story. This change can take you on an incredible journey where you can spend some more months on your comfortable chair.

If your plan is to write and get published by a real world publisher, you really have to be a strong willed person. This process can take some more moths out of your life. The truth is it might never happen. There is however other avenues you can follow in order to write for money. They may not be as glorious as having your book published and seeing it in every store, but it will get your novel read, you will build a fan base, and you will get paid for your work.

This seems like a good deal right. Well it is, but again the truth has to be told. It is not easy guys. If anyone wants to tell you that it is easy they are telling you a story. To get paid to do anything involves some work, the same with getting paid for your writing. You'll have to prepare your mind for the business part of writing. Writing your novel might be work but it is fun, it is your passion, so let’s not consider this creative writing to be work. I want you to consider the getting sold part as your work. Not all of us like to market ourselves, but this is how we get money for our writing.

Writing for a living means we are giving ourselves the title of author. Once you start calling yourself an author, you have to become an author. If you claim to be an author and a business day goes by where you did not write, you are not an author, or a writer and creative writing is not your job or your passion. Writing only happens when we sit down and write. You will spend hours in your mind in a world that does not really exist and then you will spend hours bent over to make that picture in your mind come alive in words. It is not the easy road to riches, it takes work, writing work. The good news is that it is incredibly fulfilling.

Who can become a creative writer

Creative writing in itself is not that difficult. Almost all of us can pick up a pen and write a few lines, but there are not that many that can pick up a pen and write a coherent five page story - somehow we get lost in space and time. There are even fewer of us that can pick up a pen and let our words paint a vivid picture (creative writing.) It really does not matter in which category you fall, there is hope. There is always room for improvement, and improvement is the stepping stones to success

Just like any other Job in the world, the business of writing a novel, also calls for certain skills. No-one just walks into a job and knows exactly what to do, unless they have trained to do it. Creative writing is the same. There are some things we should master before our writing will become competitive. There are certain tools like creative writing software and taking some creative writing courses that will help us in this venture, but in the end the most valuable tool you have is your mind, your heart and your imagination.

Many great authors never did a writing course, but then again many of them did. Some people have a natural talent for the art. They start writing and finish a masterpiece in weeks. Sadly not all of us have this ability. Some of us have to do the ground work before it comes naturally. The fact that you are reading this page shows that you have a passion and you know you don't have the natural ability yet.

Writing courses, the way to become a better author?

Bookkeepers study accounting for their trade, Journalists go on a diploma course to build a career. The creative writer that is serious about becoming a published author should not think that he/she is free from this criterion. The difference is, the creative author does not need to go to university to gain the skills needed to build a career out of writing.

These skills can be practiced at home, it can be honed very fast depending on your dedication to your passion for writing. The good thing about creative writing is that you can earn money while you learn. You can make money from writing before you have your first novel published by writing articles for businesses. We will show you how to do this on the how to make money with creative writing page.

The good news about creative writing

There is however good news for all aspiring authors. If creative writing is your passion you will have a load of fun doing it. There is enough space in this world for your writing as well. There is nothing greater than receiving your first cheque for a novel you have written and second to that seeing your writing published. You will work your own hours, no traffic, no arrogant bosses, and most of all you will get out of it what you put into it.

Creative writing is a lucrative career. It does not have to be in the form of a published novel, there are many avenues you can take to make a good living in the writing world while you are working to get your novel published. Even if major publishing houses do not want your work right now, you can still publish your work online and make money from it. You can then resubmit your work later to see if the publishing market has changed. Who knows, you might find publishing houses reacting favourably to your novel.

Making money with creative writing

As we've mentioned earlier, writing a novel can take a long time. Having that novel published can take just as long. This is where we are going to help you. There are other avenues you can take in order to make a living while you are working on your novel These are maybe not as glorious as having your novels sold in all the major bookstores, but at least no one will pressure you to get a job and tell you to stop your flight of fancy as an author. Creative writing is a tough game, getting published even more so. You do not need the extra pressure of people telling you, you must get a job and stop writing.

For this reason we have added to this site the how to make money with creative writing page. Trust me this will save you hours of explaining to others about your writing dreams verses your financial responsibilities. Too many times I've heard broken authors say that if they could only have hung on for another month or two they would have pulled through. Their responsibilities and families caused them to give up on a dream and a career. If they only knew there were other means to supplement their income until that glorious day, they might have been published authors today. So be sure to give this some serious thought.

  • Hello,

My name is Kelly and I am a Middle School English Teacher. I'm sorry to bother you, but I wanted to let you know that your page, http://english-creativewriting.com/English%20Courses.html, is very informative and helpful! I found your site when I was doing some research for a classroom project.

I also wanted to let you know that during my research, I found another informative and resourceful page on grammar and punctuation: http://www.onlineschools.org/resources/guide-to-grammar-and-punctuation/, that was very helpful to me. I will be using some of the info and resources in my classroom.

I think it might make a nice additional resource for your site, if you are updating your site. I hope my suggestion helps!

Thanks and have a great day,
    Kelly
